The Two Others

Maro came on the Monday, and Penn did not, and the not-coming was, Iyla understood by the Tuesday morning, itself a kind of answer; but it was Maro's coming that she wanted, first, to think about, because Maro's coming had been a thing done in a particular way, and the particular way was, she was beginning to learn, where the information lived.

Maro arrived at the soup place at half past one, which was the time Kettle had told her, in the note he had pushed under her door on the Sunday, that Iyla would be there. She came in without her coat, which was strange, because it was cold; and Iyla worked out, watching her cross the room, that she had not been wearing a coat because she had walked from the Reading Room, which was twenty minutes away, without going home first, which meant she had heard from Kettle in the morning and had spent the intervening four hours doing something that had not, in her own mind, allowed the detour of fetching outerwear. She sat down. She did not order. She put both hands flat on the table, palms down, the way a person puts down a thing they are afraid will, if they let go of it, shake.

"Tell me the worst of it," she said. "Not the whole of it. The worst. I have, on the way over, prepared myself for several worsts, and I would like to know which one I have, in fact, walked into, because the preparing-for and the walking-into are different sizes of room and I need to know which size I am in."

Iyla told her the worst, which was the boy on the step. She told it in three sentences, because three sentences was what the worst, stripped of its context, took; and she watched Maro's face do, in the small economical way of Maro's face, the thing it did, which was to receive the information without performing the reception of it, and to file the information, somewhere behind the eyes, in a drawer that had, Iyla saw, been waiting for it.

"Right," Maro said. "That is the larger of the two rooms I prepared for. Thank you for telling me the worst first. I am going to ask you, now, four questions, in an order, and I would like you to answer them in the order, because the order is how I am going to know what to do."

"Go on."

"One. Did Penn know what the extractions were being used for at the kitchen-world end. I am not asking whether she ought to have known. I am asking whether she did."

"I don't know," said Iyla. "Saroya said she read Penn's notes. The notes were observational. They did not, in what I saw of them, contain a kitchen-world ledger."

"Good. That is a useful 'I don't know,' and I will treat it as one. Two. Has Saroya, in any of your conversations, named, by name, the other people in the Society who have been into Lentar without you."

"T. Aldenor. Penn. She implied others, in the plural, but did not name them."

"Three. The tax. When you have been in Lentar in the last ten days, has the tax been heavier than it was before the extractions began."

Iyla thought. She had not, until Maro asked, framed it in those words; but the framing, once asked, made a thing visible that had been there in the corner of the room for some days, which was that she had, on the Thursday, come back from Lentar and forgotten the word for a kitchen implement she had used that morning, and had stood at the drawer for thirty seconds before the word came; and that on the Friday, after the café, she had not been able, briefly, to remember the colour of her own front door.

"Yes," she said. "It has."

"That is what I thought. Four, and this is the one I have walked four hours in the cold to ask, so I would like you to take a moment before answering. Are you asking me, by telling me this, to do something; or are you telling me because telling Maro is, on your private list, a thing one does, and you would like me to decide, on my own, what to do with the telling."

Iyla considered. It was, she thought, a better question than she had been prepared to be asked, and the betterness of it was, she was now noticing, the shape of Maro's particular usefulness: Maro was a person who would not let you offload the decision of what you were asking onto the person you were asking it of, because offloading that decision was, in Maro's view, the first move of a kind of cowardice she would not, on principle, collaborate with.

"I am telling you," Iyla said, "because telling you is, on my private list, a thing one does. I am not, in this conversation, asking you to do anything. I would like — and I am saying 'would like' rather than 'am asking,' on purpose — I would like you, in the days that follow, to decide what you decide; and I would like, whatever you decide, for you to tell me, in advance of doing it, what you have decided, so that I can plan around the decision rather than be surprised by it. That is the request. It is a small request and it is the only one I am making."

Maro nodded once. She took her hands off the table. She turned them over, looked at the palms, and put them back, this time loosely, in her lap, which Iyla read — she was reading everything, now, with the small over-attentive precision of a woman who had recently learned that the room she was in was the room — as the gesture of a person whose preparing-for was now finished and whose walking-into could begin.

"Then I will tell you what I have decided," Maro said, "which I decided on the walk over, and which the conversation has not changed. I am with you. I am with you in the small particular way that is the only way I know how to be with people, which is that I will not, from this afternoon, enter any world that is not my own without the consent, in writing, of the person whose world it is; I will not pass to the Society any observation I make about you, your habits, your annotations, your locations, your moods, or the contents of Lentar; and I will, if asked by Saroya or anyone working with her, say that I will not, and give my reasons, in the order I have just given them to you. I am not, you should know, doing this for you. I am doing it because Lessons in Restraint, which I taught you about the tax, was a lesson I learned from a woman who paid for the teaching by losing, before she died, the names of her two sisters; and because if I taught you that lesson honestly on the Tuesday and then sat, on the Monday, in the same room as a person mining the named-ness out of your city, I would be a different sort of person than the one I have, with some effort, become. I would like you to understand that the reason I am with you is, in this sense, a reason about me, and not about you, and that this is, in my view, a stronger reason than the other kind, because it does not depend on you continuing to be the person I currently think you are."

"I understand," said Iyla, and she did; and she noticed, with the small grateful precision she was learning to keep for the noticings of this kind, that Maro had given her not a vow but an architecture, and that an architecture was, in the long run, more load-bearing than a vow, because an architecture did not require, of the person standing inside it, the daily maintenance of feeling.

"Good," said Maro. "Now order me a soup, because I have walked four hours and I am cold, and the having of a soup will, on my private list, mark the conversation as closed for the afternoon, and I would like to mark it closed, because I have, this evening, a separate conversation to have, with Penn, which I would like not to walk into still warm from this one."

Iyla ordered her a soup. They ate. They did not talk about Lentar. Maro asked, instead, about the bookshop, and about Mr. Behr's wife who had died eleven years ago, and about the title of the book Iyla had been annotating in the café on the Friday before Saroya had first sat down across from her; and Iyla understood that these questions were not idle, that they were Maro's way of doing the thing she had just promised — of attending to the small particulars on Iyla's side of the door with the same care she had refused to lend to the mining of particulars on the other — and she answered the questions properly, in the small specific way they had been asked, because the answering of properly-asked questions was a courtesy she now understood she owed to the people who asked them.

Penn did not come on the Monday. Penn did not come on the Tuesday. On the Wednesday morning, a letter arrived at Iyla's door, in a handwriting she had seen before only in the marginalia of The Master and Margarita, the careful upright handwriting of the person who had drawn the small door on page forty-seven; and Iyla understood, before she opened it, that Penn's answer had been, all along, the long detour through her library books and the careful annotations and the small door, and that the answer had been given some months before the question had, on Iyla's side, even been formed.

The letter was short. It was shorter than Iyla had expected, and the shortness of it was, she understood as she read, the answer-within-the-answer, because Penn was a person who used length when she was uncertain and shortness when she was not.

Iyla — I have been asked, by Saroya, whether I will continue. I have said that I will. I would like you to know that I have said so, and that I have said so for reasons I believe are good, and that I do not expect you to accept that the reasons are good, because the goodness of reasons is not, in my experience, transferable across the kind of disagreement we are now in. I will continue to enter Lentar. I will continue to do so without your consent, on the understanding that consent, from an Author, is a category of permission the Society has, for two hundred years and after careful thought, decided not to require, and that I am, in this respect, an instrument of a policy older and better-considered than my own preferences. I will not, in entering, take from places you have asked me, in writing or in person, not to take from; the dyers' quarter, the school, the chapel with the candle. This is a courtesy I am extending to you personally, in recognition of what you may have lost, and not a concession on the principle, which I do not concede. I am sorry about the boy on the step. I did not know about the boy. I would like you to believe that. I do not require you to. — P.

Iyla read it twice. She read it a third time, slowly, because the third reading was the one in which the small architecture of the letter, as distinct from its content, became visible to her; and what became visible was that Penn had written the letter the way a person writes a thing they intend, later, to be able to show — to Saroya, perhaps; to a tribunal, perhaps; to herself, certainly — as evidence that she had given notice, and that the giving of notice was, in her own ledger, the discharging of a debt that she did not, otherwise, recognise.

She put the letter down. She did not, she noticed, feel surprised; what she felt was a small clean clarification, which was that Penn had told her, in writing, exactly what Penn was going to do, and that the telling was, perversely, a gift, because a told thing could be planned against in a way an untold thing could not. She catalogued the gift. She catalogued, also, the particular shape of the choice Penn had made, because she wanted to be able to recognise the shape later, when she met it again in someone else, as she would; and the shape was this: that Penn had decided, somewhere in the last week, that the policy was a better thing to belong to than the person, and that the betterness of belonging-to-policies was a position she could occupy with what she experienced, sincerely, as honour. It was not, Iyla saw, a stupid choice. It was, in fact, the choice of an intelligent person who had decided that intelligence was best deployed in the service of the institution that had, at nineteen, found her and named her and told her what she was; and Iyla understood, with the dry small clarity that was, she was now sure, her working weather, that this was the version of the choice that was going to be hardest to argue against in the years to come, because the people making it were not going to be the cruel ones, or the stupid ones, or the greedy ones, but the ones who had, in good faith, decided that an old institution was wiser than a new conscience.

She put Penn's letter, folded once, into the back of her notebook, on the page opposite the list of small true things, because she wanted the two documents to live near each other; the list of true things on one side, and on the other, in Penn's careful upright hand, a letter from a person who had chosen, for reasons she was prepared to defend, against them. Then she wrote, in her own hand, below the letter, a single line, because she had learned, from Maro that afternoon at the soup place, that the noting of one's own decisions in advance of being surprised by them was a small but real form of discipline, and she was now, on principle, in the business of small but real forms of discipline. The line was: Penn told me. Maro told me. I am not now alone, and I am not now uninformed, and these are two different things, and I will, from this evening, count them in two different columns.

She closed the notebook. She put the kettle on, because Kettle was coming at four, and she had, she found, begun to think of the putting-on of the kettle for Kettle as a small private joke she was allowed to have with herself, on the grounds that small private jokes, like small true things, were the kind of named-ness that, in the weeks to come, she was going to need to keep deliberately alive.
